For what it's worth, when you have time to do it, I really do recommend reading the books. They're easy reads, even the longer ones (4-7), and, depending on how much time you have to read, you could probably get through them all in a couple of weeks.
And they are just delightful fantasy novels that, even though they are aimed at children, contain strong messages about right and wrong, civil rights, and standing up for what you believe in.
The movies are pretty good, but sometimes can feel like a bit of a slog. The performances of the kids (all the kids, not just the three leads) improve as the series goes on and things get darker and more serious. It's fun to see the crème de la crème of British acting talent popping up in featured roles, sometimes no more than cameos. I'm sure Warner Bros paid a lot of mortgages for famous actors during that period. |
