| For whatever reason, I've been holding back to go see this. To be honest, I'm a big Lauren Ambrose fan, and I was deathly afraid of being disappointed. I figured I should give her some time to get comfortable in the role. It's succccchhh a hard sing. But like all of us, I saw the Tonys, and was pretty effing surprised. Lauren Ambrose didn't just sound good for a television star, she sounded good, period. And thus, I've been streaming the new cast recording, and I don't understand why Ms. Ambrose has been waiting so long to do a Broadway musical. I'm sure she just wanted to wait for the right moment. Dear god, she exceeds my wildest expectations here. Here's what I notice. Not a single vowel sounds ill-placed. I know she trained at Boston University and Tanglewood, but whoever she's been working with on this score deserves massive accolades. Her placement sounds TERRIFIC. And, on a song like "Just You Wait," which can fell the mightiest of mezzos, she moves through her belt / mix / head voice with astonishing elan. The fact that her tone is so consistent throughout her whole range is mind-blowing. Has she been singing scales and vocal exercises at home all these years?!? (Seriously. With whom is she studying?!?) However she's done it, the vocal work is ON POINT here. Every now and then I can hear where she might benefit with a little more dexterity on quick vocal phrases, but these are such tiny nitpicks. The rest of the recording sounds golden, too. I give big points to the perennially perfect Ted Sperling; I have no issues with any of the tempi. Big shout out to Justin Lee Miller for such a resonant & fun bassline on the "Loverly" intro! I'm enjoying Jordan Danica's sound on "On the Street Where You Live," too. Seems like perfect casting, vocally. Honestly, my only gripe with the cast recording would be that it's almost too clean. I do wish they could have returned to the old CBS 30th Street studio to get a warmer sound for the whole thing, but the tiny details of the orchestrations certainly aren't lost here. On the whole, an excellent recording. - GMB |
