Little Shop originally opened off-off-Broadway at the WPA Theatre. After about a month and a half it moved to the larger off-Broadway Orpheum Theater. The show eventually became one of the biggest commercial successes in off-Broadway history. Supposedly Howard Ashman, who penned the book and lyrics, felt the show was better off at the Orpheum and should not move to Broadway. Some of the producers were David Geffen, Cameron Mackintosh, and the Shuberts, all of whom were pretty savvy. The show's total run was 5+ years. There was a national tour and a movie version in 1986.

The 2003 revival played around 11 months on Broadway, but was a commercial failure.
