As well-worded and well-intentioned as the letter may be, this seems to happen year and year. The Tonys marginalize the plays and playwrights, and then the Guild fires off a letter. But this is like closing the barn door AFTER the horse has bolted. Letter-writing hasn't done any good.
The Dramatists Guild needs to do something BEFORE the Tonycast. And having the unions back them up is a start.
Given current time constraints, ALL the awards can't be given on-air, but BOOK and SCORE should be the LEAST they can do.
Here's an idea: How about saving some time by getting rid of the host? Does the Tonys really need one (let alone the attendant specialty numbers for them, and the shtick throughout the program)? Maybe have an opening number, but that's it. … To me, Neil Patrick Harris is the Emmy-winning exception to emcees: His ''Bigger'' opening to the 2013 Tonys is the best one I've ever seen, and unlikely ever to be topped. |
