Did the OBC recording ever actually go out of print? Perhaps it did for a brief time when the London stereo version came out, because Columbia wanted to boost sales for the new version? Or maybe the OBC never officially went out of print but was just harder to find for a time when the London version was released. As I'm sure you know, the OBC recording was one of the biggest selling record albums in history. (See link.)
I personally have always considered the London recording a big disappointment because I find the performances of all the leads who continued from Broadway inferior overall to their performances on the OBC -- and also because, ironically, I think the sound quality of the London stereo recording is actually inferior to the mono OBC, |
