There are lighting crews, set construction crews and costume crews and NU students are required to do at least two a year, IIRC. On top of the acting classes, regular course work, required reading, etc. it makes life very demanding for Northwestern theater majors. So young Katrina would have been required to work on a production backstage as part of her degree at the School of Speech.
