The idea that it is free because the city owns the land is a nice one. But it is not true. Paying rent has nothing to do with this. Most non-profits on public lands pay a token rent anyway. You are looking for an overall policy where there is none.
The city wanted Papp to charge for this. The Zoo charges. Under the conditions of its lease the Met can charge if it wants to--like it did before 1970..
The Delacorte has been offering tickets to donors of set amounts for as long as I have been going there (that is the 80s). Probably goes back further. |
