This would never happen today, but there was a 12-MINUTE tribute to plays, featuring actors in tuxedos and elegant black dresses.

Tony winner Jose Ferrer kicked things off with an excerpt from ''Cyrano de Bergerac,'' followed by David Wayne reciting lines from ''Mister Roberts'' (the first Best Production winner). The parade of actors that followed included: Lee Remick, Bea Arthur, Jack Lemmon, Hume Cronyn, Colleen Dewhurst, Richard Kiley, Sam Waterston, Marlo Thomas, Ben Vereen, Anthony Perkins, Frank Langella, Leslie Uggams, Jack Gilford, etc.

Among those recreating their roles: Jessica Tandy in ''The Fourposter''; Maureen Stapleton in ''The Rose Tattoo''; Charles Durning in ''That Championship Season''; Philip Anglim in ''The Elephant Man''; John Rubinstein and Phyllis Frelich in ''Children of a Lesser God'' …
