The Public has been doing this for years. They use the language of donation, but they are clearly selling tickets. It is so widely known that they are selling their "free" tickets that Michael Friedman made a joke about it in his Shakespeare in the Park musical
We can debate whether it makes good economic sense to sell a certain number of tickets at inflated prices in exchange for the Public's increased free access to Shakespeare through their outer borough ticket push and the Mobile Lab. We can also note the high level of production values in recent years, and view these tickets as a trade off that makes these productions possible. But let's not turn a blind eye to what the Public is blatantly doing and getting away with. Of course, since the Park itself is only as nice as it is through private donations, we would do better to acknowledge all the ways in which pubkic amenities have been degraded in the past three decades. |
