The person I liked most in the production was James Hazeldine. Petherbridge was fine. But I felt that both Jackson and Cox were not very effective in the first half of the play when we needed to believe that sexual energy was always on the verge of jumping out of their bodies. At just about the halfway point, when the characters hit a certain age, their performances started to work much better. In particular I remember a moment when Jackson and Cox touched each other, and they were supposed to be feeling overwhelming hots for each other, and I just wasn't buying it. I imagine this is often a problem when the play is done, which obviously isn't too often nowadays.

It's amazing how popular the play was when it was new. It made a lot of money for the Theatre Guild. There were two touring companies that each went on for a year or two. Every city in the country wanted Strange Interlude.
