| Audience was rapturous....I wasn't. The material is not nearly as strong as I remembered it (primarily from the movie version, which I thought was somewhat unforgettable). It seemed illogical, overwrought and over-determined. The gears were really, really visible. That said, I thought Parsons was excellent-- he felt most "real" to me and I think he is a tremendously powerful stage actor. Quinto was very good, but I'm not sure that the role is ultimately very good-- he gets all the bitchy asides but really doesn't register. I felt like nobody got a chance to be Great, though I liked Hutchinson. Watkins was compelling. Bomer and Carver didn't make much of an impact, though I think both actors have a lot of charisma. While the Emory character got all the audience love, I thought the character was written (and played) as a caricature and I didn't really enjoy it esp in the early going. I'm conflicted about Rannells on stage. I think he is a very talented performer-- loved him MORMON and on GIRLS-- but felt his stage work in FALSETTOS and BOYS is too studied and too cute by half. At least in BOYS he (and the writing) got stronger as the show progressed, but I fear that the actor is being a Celebrity on the stage and not being the character. I know the BOYS set has been a hot topic on this board and others, but I did not like it at all. It might have been an accurate reflection of what a Manhattan apartment looked like in that era, I couldn't understand how Parsons character could afford a big, shiny duplex with major contemporary closet and bathroom space....esp since he's supposed to be unable to make any money, living beyond his means (and trying desperately to shield it by overspending on clothes....). |
