| Forgive me if I'm saying something that's terribly obvious and that you already know, but I think the reason why Michael can afford that apartment — speaking generally based on the description in the script, not to the particulars of this production's set — is that it wasn't nearly as insanely expensive, even in relative terms, to rent an apartment of that size in Manhattan in 1968 as it would be today. And he is living beyond his means, as you mention. I'm linking two pages where you can see some photos of the original production. Only a few on each of these pages will give you much sense of the original set design, but those few may be helpful (and the photos on both pages are generally neat).
