Coming out in the sixties pre-Stonewall, I knew many men like Emory. They mostly had to try to act straight in the outside world with varying degrees of success and some with no success at all. some even gave up trying. Regardless when they got in an all gay environment, the flamboyant queen really appeared. One of my big challenges was to get over my embarrassment of being seen with these guys. It took Stonewall and the founding of a Gay and Lesbian Rights Group in Syracuse, NY to do it (The Syracuse Gay Freedom League, now defunct.) Happily I can say it worked. There are stilll some people like Emory in today's society, in terms of outrageous behavior and "swishiness" Thankfully today because of groups like the above mentioned GFL and because of people like the readers of this board I hope) and countless others, people like Emory do not have to live with the self hatred and fear. Some still do but there now is help. i wish you all a happy LGBTQ and Allies Pride Month!
