| Caught “Jerome Robbins’ Broadway” at the MUNY last night. First time there - what a fun, outdoor theatre. It was a temperate, breezy evening following an outrageous rainstorm that lasted up until about 15 min before curtain. Before the show we all had to stand up and look at the American flag while the national anthem played. I’m NYC-based and don’t see a lot of regional theater. Is this sorta thing the norm? Caught me a bit off guard! Patriotism is tricky right now. As for the show- truly thrilling to see such a large cast dancing in so many styles. Really reminds you of the scope and power of Robbins’ work. I appreciated what a huge undertaking this was. It must be very intense to dance WSS, The Small House of Uncle Thomas, On the Town, and Fiddler all in one night. A thousand kudos to the dancers. However, I never felt that transcendent joy I expected to feel. I felt a slight lift during “Cool” and also when the kids started flying in the “Peter Pan” sequence. My hypothesis for this is twofold: 1) These excerpts are stronger within the context of the whole show where you have built relationship with the characters. And I realized I’ve been lucky to see expertly constructed productions of most of these shows. 2) The rehearsal process must be fast for shows at the MUNY (like most summer stock), so likely there isn’t much time given to discussing character/intention/etc. Performers and choreographers are likely fast-passing the rehearsals to make sure it’s all technically there and that a general wash of acting is present. Correct me if I’m wrong. I wanted to love it, but it definitely had that feeling of “phew, we did it y'all!” For those that saw the original, did it feel like lite-versions of the material, or did each piece carry the emotional wallop that it did within the source shows? I imagine that if this production had a longer rehearsal time and a longer run it would really shine. But, for me, I’d rather just see full productions of each of these shows. |
