| A question occurred to me while reading the JEROME ROBBINS’ BROADWAY thread just below this post about the surprise of standing for the National Anthem before the performance starts. The only time this ever happened to me was in London, in 1973, at a midnight performance of "Carry On London" at the Victoria Palace. Just as the houselights went down, GOD SAVE THE QUEEN blasted over the loudspeakers. The full house groaned loudly, but everyone got to their feet and several sang along. On the last note, everyone laughed and applauded and sat back down. It was actually a great way to start the revue. Anyway, what would be the reaction these days on Broadway if the National Anthem was unexpectedly played before a performance? What would you do? |
