I believe the justification offered for doing it at On the Town was because the anthem was played before performances of the original production. If memory serves, they also played the anthem before performances of the Encores! On the Town. My understanding is that this was done at all Broadway shows during World War II. As the original On the Town run continued after the war was over, I wonder if the anthem was being played before the show later in the run.
Of course, we don't get the anthem before performances of revivals of other Broadway shows originally produced during World War II. I presume they thought playing it before performances of the On the Town was appropriate because of the show's subject matter and that it would help the audiences get in the mood.
