Broadway theatres began playing the anthem even before we entered the war--July 1940--as a curtain raiser or a finale. After we joined the battle, people were urged to stand for the anthem in support of the men and women fighting abroad.

After the war ended, the regular playing of the anthem at sporting events and on Broadway tapered off. The commissioner of the NFL in 1945 said the league would nonetheless continue to play it before every game.

In 1972, they played the anthem at the start of THAT CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON, even though (the Times observed) it was "rarely" done any more. The stage manager reported the number of people who stood up ranged from zero to half capacity. When asked why more plays didn't start with the anthem, he said plays demand a certain mood and the anthem wasn't always right for that mood. For this, it was.
