According to the NYT article. Abbott's comment: " a symbolic statement that lets the audience know about what's happening in the country and the forces that shape these people.” I"m guessing it's a scene setter-- going back to 20 years to that season...which would put it during the Korean War. But, yes, there's a helluva lot of difference playing the anthem in 1952 and 1972.
