| Andrew Rannells is good. |

I was just watching a clip from GIRLS and marvelling at how empathetic Rannells manages to make Elijah despite the breathtaking solipsism and selfishness he displays.
It reminded me of the similar way he was able to turn Elder Price into such a loveable character even though on the page almost everything he did was out of vainglory and ego. Deep down, he seemed to have "good" in him and that got me onside.
Even though I liked him in FALSETTOS and THE BOYS IN THE BAND, I can't say I walked away with a very strong feeling about his work, other than he always seems to bring wit and intelligence to his roles.
I hope he is able to find roles that exploit his morally and ethically ambiguous traits. For instance I think he'd be an amazing Harold Hill in THE MUSIC MAN.
He could be an American equivalent of Hugh Grant: an actor of limited range but infinite variation within that limited range. |
