I also saw Boys this week. I thought it was a great production with some very good performances, especially Zachary Quinto and Tuc Watkins. I know that memory plays tricks when one gets older, but having seen the original in 1968, one thing struck me: While both casts were great, I think the fact that the original cast was actually living through those times where non-acceptance had great personal impact on who they were and how they behaved. That these actual experiences were closer to the characters they played, made it much more organic and real and less “acted”. I remember crying at the end of the original production when Michael spoke his last lines. It has to be difficult, even for very fine actors, to understand and get into the skin of these characters when they are as out as this group, and have not been subjected to the kinds of disgrace and discrimination that existed just before Stonewall.
