| Saw her in "Master Class" in Boston, after Caldwell and LuPone. She was dreadfully one uninteresting note, never terrible yet never able to bring new colors or fire, inhibited by some inner set of brakes. We wanted to see the old flashes of bravura that might match the ego and restlessness Callas; we got a lot of posturing and sing-song line readings -- that Dunaway half-laugh on inappropriate words that we know from Diana and Joan -- and no build in the evening (same production as B'way, same team). I left realizing she had no clue about what a diva truly is, one of the cruel ironies of an evening that seemed to wear on forever. |
