Re Strange Interlude: As I wrote, I'm not sure that there was especially a front-runner that year with at least three very strong nominees and a fourth who was not considered chopped liver, although Channing's win was not a surprise. Having said that, I just did a search to see if I could find any predictions for that year's Tony awards in newspapers from the period. The only one I could find predicted Jackson, although that was not from a New York-bsed journalist but rather from Malcolm Johnson, longtime theatre critic for the Hartford Courant. |
