| (MORE SPOILERS AHEAD) Dina shares her story openly near the top of the play, armed with her knife and cutting up melon--she was married, she thought she knew how it was going to turn out ("you're in your movie, you know how these things go...."), and the marriage failed ("blah, blah, blah...."). During the song she asks about whether he is married, he says yes, but...and she assumes that his story is like hers, that the marriage didn't work and he's divorced. Later in the play (I think it's in the park, perhaps it's at another point in the show), he tells her about his son's death and how it ruined his marriage (you must have missed that). Everything about their performances indicated to me why they didn't end up sleeping together. She's open, free, sexual, voluble, earthy. He's buttoned up (literally, look at that "Sgt. Pepper suit"), emotionally closed off, restricted, inarticulate, intellectual. They both become fascinated with one another, compelled at what they can read into one another, and despite all their differences they form a bond of intimacy and openness. For him, singing to her in the park, showing her what it's like when he is conducting--that's a degree of intimacy that is more than he may have had in years. For that one moment he is free. Physical intimacy would sully that moment--for him. That's what I got. Perhaps it's out of respect for her. Perhaps it's about his own sense of self-respect, or regard for his dead marriage, or perhaps he can't overcome the societal differences between them to allow himself to cross that line. Dina's journey of intimacy needs a different kind of fulfillment, and in desperation she turns to the next available man. But you know (and she knows) that the person she's really making love to is sleeping in the next room. |
