As a number of big stars don't necessarily write their own material, I do think we could see more shows with that basis. But we've already had some notable ones (some centered on the singing stars, some not - but in each case, the stars we associate with the songs were not generally the writers.)

We can also make the argument that in most cases, the Broadway songbook revues that were predecessors of what we now call the jukebox musical (the various Sondheim revues, for instance, or The World Goes Round, A Grand Night For Singing, Jerry's Girls, etc) also follow that concept, and of course we never give it a second thought. So it's nothing new. |
