| First of all, you have it backwards. The bio-centered jukebox musicals are "shoehorning" the scenes around the existing songs, not the other way around. Also, these are not generally "dramatic" scenes - they are often pretty pedestrian. The "lives of the stars," when you really look at things, aren't usually that interesting in of themselves to make great theatre - no more than a show written about you or I, lol. The nostalgia for the ready-made arrangements of the songs one fondly remembers from radio play are what drive these shows, not anything else - and in that sense I agree with you that straight-up revues (something closer to your "simple concert presentation") generally work better, at least for me. They put the only thing most people really want to hear - the famous songs - center stage, and get rid of the needless fat that gets shoehorned in - the book. As to "truly a destruction of American musical theatre" - I totally disagree. It's hyperbole like that that is destructive. No matter how good a season, there are always the Jeremiahs complete with sackcloth and ashes, and the Eeyores, so ready to tell us that "musicals are dead" (same for other disciplines, like "opera is dead" etc). So far it hasn't happened. And hey, not even any of the nominated musicals this year were jukebox shows. How about taking a step back from your hyperbolic proclamations and look at what is positive about Broadway, instead of the boring negativity? I'm not saying this was the greatest season ever - that would be just as hyperbolic. But come on, really? |
