At Steppenwolf (where Young Jean Lee directed herself) there was very loud, aggressive music played before the show started. All the recording were by women of color and they were explicitly about female body parts. The gender non-conforming folk were there to hand out eat plugs or invite patrons to wait in the hall. When the show started they said something like “we’ve intentionally played the music at a volume to make you uncomfortable in a space that you normally feel comfortable and those that normally feel uncomfortable comfortable. Please turn off your cell phones.” Their talk lasted about 3 minutes. They then left the stage and only returned during transitions where they moved props around and posed the actors in the scenes. Their involvement was minor and I don’t recall anyone ever “noticing them.”

I was surprised to find the play warmly sympathetic to its characters and was deeply moved.
