I don't think the snark is undeserved. Many talented "serious" writers have attached themselves to otherwise-bleh musicals ... Colman Domingo ("Summer: The Donna Summer Musical") and David Henry Hwang (Disney's "Tarzan") rapidly come to mind. Who knows what this will bode?
I'd also mention Katori Hall for her work on "Tina: The Tina Turner Musical," but I don't personally know if the book is good or bad. Either way, an accomplished playwright working on commercial jukebox fare.
