SKINTIGHT Tonight (Possible Spoiler)

Joshua Harmon is a talented young playwright. He's thoughtful and smart, and he has a flair for the provocative. With SKINTIGHT he's firing on a number of cylinders, but it's largely unclear what he's aiming at. It doesn't help matters that the play is badly directed. It's sluggish and it careers from farce to melodrama to a variation on an issue, or problem, play. The actors are neither funny enough nor otherwise credible. The only character that seems remotely plausible is a young Jewish gay man who's the sort of contemporary neurotic that Harmon writes so well. Otherwise, unclarity reigns. Everyone is either preposterously unlikeable or just preposterous. The play is entirely unpersuasive. With some notable exceptions--an elderly gay man being lectured at by his heterosexual daughter on the difference between lust and love is patronizing if not homophobic--it's mostly an amiable mess.

I thought the jokes landed. I dont have to like any character and they all have flaws like real people. And a lot of the motivation is inheritance even though it isnt stated. The boy toy is on track to get a lot starting with that watch and the daughter trying to undermine thst relationship made sense to me including her speech nesr the end.

SLIGHT SPOILER (I guess)

Is this really "inspired" by Calvin Klein's, uh, story? Narrative? Mythology?

The play needs more work on multiple levels. Writing, direction, acting
As au courant as it wants to be, it's dated. The characters' attitudes are passé, as if written 5-10 years ago.

I agree with everything you’ve said. I’ve very much enjoyed three other Harmon plays (Bad Jews, Significant Other and Admissions), but this play is uncharacteristically unfocused and superficial. And except for the performance by that young Jewish gay man — a role that seems to be a variation on characters in the other Harmon plays), the acting is just awful. The actor playing the father rings pathetic rather than charismatic, and Menzel doesn’t have good enough comic timing. And the self felt completely inauthentic to boot.

interesting; I found it entirely plausible. Not only that, but... (possible spoilers)

I know those characters. In one form or another, in various guises, I've seen those people and relationships very like theirs in real life. (& in one case, exactly like theirs).
What you saw as patronizing and homophobic I saw as an honest, earnest, if flawed attempt to communicate.
I'm curious, did you think there was a 'good guy' and 'bad guy', and that the playwright was coming down more strongly on one side or the other?
I saw a father and daughter, both struggling, both doing their best, and in their effort to be honest with each other, neither of them being entirely honest with themselves.

What I observed was a collection of characters who were so self-absorbed (with the possible exception of the maid and the butler) that it was difficult to care about them.

Calvin Klein must not be too pleased at the appropriation of many of his biographical details.
