I know those characters. In one form or another, in various guises, I've seen those people and relationships very like theirs in real life. (& in one case, exactly like theirs).
What you saw as patronizing and homophobic I saw as an honest, earnest, if flawed attempt to communicate.
I'm curious, did you think there was a 'good guy' and 'bad guy', and that the playwright was coming down more strongly on one side or the other?
I saw a father and daughter, both struggling, both doing their best, and in their effort to be honest with each other, neither of them being entirely honest with themselves. |
