| I'm always intrigued with songs that are cut after a show opens. A fascinating sub-category. Alan Scott is the likely board expert here. "Camelot" is probably the most famous example of show re-thought well into the run. A handful of songs were let go, including some beloved ones still licensed. But in the last 30 years, others have been rethought. Then there are shows that are rebooted. "The Scarlet Pimpernel." Of course, there are those shows that have as many iterations as there are people to discuss them, i.e. "On a Clear Day..." currently another topic) and the king or queen of them all, "Candide," in which different lyrics repurposed some of the most beautiful music ever composed. (Not always successfully, to my ear: If memory serves -- I'm no "Candide" expert, though I've seen every major NYC production except the very first -- when Jim Dale made "My Love" more of a comedy spot, my heart rebelled.) |
