"Othello" in the Park

Skip it.

This "classical" staging is completely non-specific to any time or place (despite the Elizabethan regalia), and as a result suffers from "museum piece" blah-ness. A synth score doesn't help matters ... why not hire real musicians to record it?

Performances are serviceable but never interesting. A real lack of specificity with language creates that general wash of Shakespearean verse without any entry points into character or story. The plot is barely coherent for the first half hour (according to the two guests I was with who were unfamiliar with the text).

We left at intermission. If the mission of Shakespeare in the Park is to bring Shakespeare to the masses, it may help if the productions are either entertaining or accessible - god forbid both!
