The point of the play is that Matt has no way of renouncing privilege (aka "stepping back") that doesn't read as "damaged loser." I'm basing this assertion on interviews with the writer.
This is extremely tricky to bring off, and most reviewers miss it. I assume Lee added the two 'outside' characters (since the NY premiere) in an attempt at clarification.
