| Thanks for the report. "There hasn't been a major revival of CARMEN JONES in NY since it premiered on Broadway 75 years ago." Depends on your definition of major revival. Is that what press releases say? It came back for a three-week return engagement at City Center in May 1945, before going off on tour. A year later, at the end of the tour, it played three weeks again at City Center. In 1956, the City Center Light Opera Company revived it. And in 1959, it was given one more full-scale production in what was called the Theater in the Park, an outdoor theater at the Wollman Rink where, among other things, some early NYSF productions played. This Carmen Jones was one of three musicals presented in 1959 as part of the Hudson Celebration, commemorating the 350th anniversary of Henry Hudson's discovery of the Hudson River. Ballet companies and musicals also performed there that summer as part of the celebration. |
