Janiak's isn't the only rave review for ''Soft Power'' at the Curran.

San Francisco Examiner: ''East meets West hilariously in 'Soft Power' '' (by Leslie Katz). … ''David Henry Hwang’s new “Soft Power,” a fun, smart concoction — a musical within a play — satirically touches on timely and timeless political and cultural points. It’s a treat from start to finish. Onstage at the Curran, the appealing mashup — with book and lyrics by the Tony winner for “M. Butterfly” and a terrific score by Jeanine Tesori (“Fun Home”) that joyfully references Rodgers & Hammerstein and classic musicals — tells a story of clashing cultures, America and China, and has a darling romance, too.''

San Jose Mercury: ''Soft Power' is a bold, new style of theater at SF's Curran'' (by Sam Hurwitt). … ''The musical's vision of America is hilariously warped, full of gun-toting desperadoes and meth bars. … The musical numbers are a delightful pastiche of Broadway, from Rodgers and Hammerstein to Sondheim and beyond. The songs seem as if they were as much of a blast to create as they are to behold. … It's a marvelously clever look at America through a different lens.''

These critics were all invited on the same press night, the opening (June 21). There's no collusion or conspiracy. Sometimes, critics agree; sometimes, they're all over the map. I've been a theater reviewer (ages ago at the S.F. Examiner), and I've edited tons of theater reviews and known many critics. Critics are an opinionated lot. And they're not shy about what they like. Or don't like. It's silly to ascribe agendas to them. It's just taste. Sometimes, I agree with 'em; sometimes, not. And so it goes.
