Anyone attending "Bandstand" in cinemas tonight and Thursday?
Posted by: Delvino 08:53 am EDT 06/25/18

I've never seen a B'way production via these venues (missed "Allegiance," alas, despite all of its returns). Thinking of going. I've heard to expect disappointing sound. Any other reactions to these filmed performances?

I also went tonight. The theater at Union Square seemed close to sold out, but it was a smaller house. Overall I thought it was very successful. The picture and camera-work were better than Allegiance, but the sound in the theater continues to be an issue. I’m convinced that it’s probably as much a problem with the venue as anything else. There just wasn’t much sparkle to the sound in a lot of places, even though the balance was pretty good overall.

If I had to critique it, I might say that’s was a bit heavy on the close-ups. I certainly could’ve used more wide shots to see the big-picture staging and choreography. The standout numbers on screen are the same as they were on stage: Act 1 closer, Act 2 opener and the finale. Really special.

Just got home. Overall they did a very good job. I seem to be in the minority as I think too many close ups but others around us were saying that is what they liked. Very happy to be able to see it again.

FB group says the sound mix is muddy; feelings?

Is the sound issue volume, or blend of ensemble/soloists and orchestra? This show always had a challenge in that area, since 1/4 of the instruments are played inside the story, mixed with the pit band at the sound board. Is that the reaction, or is it simply too softly presented/set in the video?

I tend to find the sound too soft in traditional filmed musicals, i.e. "Mama Mia," "Rent," "Evita" (especially). Old enough to remember when "Tommy" was at least a roof raiser.

I'll be going Thursday night in California. I did see Allegiance this way, and thought the sound was fine.

Which is surprising since they don’t allow premium showing like iMax and 3d.

...but it's only $1 more than a usual feature, whereas 3D is usually at least $4 or $5 more.

Good thing you got it this morning because it’s bit available anymore even though the movie house is only half full.

Going Thursday night in NJ, close to the city. I hear it's sold out in some places, while fewer than 5 seats have been sold elsewhere. Will report back.

I wonder how ''Bandstand'' will sell. At least New Jersey is part of an area that's targeted for Broadway shows and advertising.

But how will it do in the rest of the country? I love Laura Osnes and Corey Cott, but they're not ''big-name'' stars (yet).

Anyone see any advertising or national press for ''Bandstand''? Hope the turnout turns out to be better than ''Nobody.''

I'm going tonight in Boston, with the special pleasure of being able to see a wonderful friend and colleague up on the screen.

I've seen a number of the Met Opera HD's and some of the theatre offerings as well. Most often everything is fine - I've had no complaints about the sound, the transmission in general, or the venue. Of course I can't speak for possible issues at other movie theatres. It's been a great way to see live productions that I wouldn't have otherwise been able to get to.

Seeing Bandstand tonight in Evanston, IL with my partner, who didn't see it on Broadway. Over the years also took in Merrily We Roll Along, She Loves Me, Newsies, Allegiance, Angels in America, Follies, possibly others. Comfortable seats, no sound issues for me. Of course, not the same experience as seeing it live on stage. Didn't see the British productions of Merrily, Follies, Angels on stage so the films were the next best thing. I saw the others on stage but wanted to re-visit them.

BTW I'll be seeing Angels later this week on Broadway.

I, too, have seen many of those same screenings over the years, plus ''Love Never Dies,'' ''Miss Saigon,'' ''From Here to Eternity,'' etc.

The first one I recall of note was ''Memphis'' (2011), which was shot on HD and looked and sounded sensational on the big screen.

And after airing on PBS, it won the 2012 Emmy for its Technical Direction and Camera Work, beating out the Oscars and Grammys.

Having been a big fan of ''Memphis,'' I was thrilled that Chad Kimball and Montego Glover's priceless performances were captured on tape.

But the best one I've seen is ''Newsies.'' Fathom Events says it's been its biggest box office hit, among filmed stage shows, and it's even bringing it back one more time (July 26 and 28) to 600 movie theaters. Disney really did it up right. They brought back the show's original stars: like Jeremy Jordan, Kara Lindsay and Ben Fankhauser, and added several more dancers for the filming. Plus, it was shot from nearly every angle with 11 cameras. And it paid off: not only growing the ''Newsies'' fan base, but feeding into the various productions that sprung up across the country.

I agree. Newsies was one of the best -- I wish Disney would release it on DVD. I can't handle paying $20 again to see it in a theater. I bought the Memphis DVD and really enjoy it.

Saw Allegiance in a Boston suburb cinema and had no problem with sound.
Seeing Bandstand tonight in another suburban cinema.

Delighted to have the opportunity to see productions I've missed when in NYC.
Bonus: seats far more comfortable (tonight's venue has recliners) than in Broadway houses. Sightlines terrific from anywhere.
Reasonable prices.
There's nothing like seeing a live production in person of course, but I'm (so far anyway) a fan of the cinema option.

Going Thursday. Have been pleasantly surprised at all the young people who attend. Sat next to a few at Falsettos and they told me they come because they can't afford the tours or the Broadway price.
