Seeing Bandstand tonight in Evanston, IL with my partner, who didn't see it on Broadway. Over the years also took in Merrily We Roll Along, She Loves Me, Newsies, Allegiance, Angels in America, Follies, possibly others. Comfortable seats, no sound issues for me. Of course, not the same experience as seeing it live on stage. Didn't see the British productions of Merrily, Follies, Angels on stage so the films were the next best thing. I saw the others on stage but wanted to re-visit them.

BTW I'll be seeing Angels later this week on Broadway.

I, too, have seen many of those same screenings over the years, plus ''Love Never Dies,'' ''Miss Saigon,'' ''From Here to Eternity,'' etc.

The first one I recall of note was ''Memphis'' (2011), which was shot on HD and looked and sounded sensational on the big screen.

And after airing on PBS, it won the 2012 Emmy for its Technical Direction and Camera Work, beating out the Oscars and Grammys.

Having been a big fan of ''Memphis,'' I was thrilled that Chad Kimball and Montego Glover's priceless performances were captured on tape.

But the best one I've seen is ''Newsies.'' Fathom Events says it's been its biggest box office hit, among filmed stage shows, and it's even bringing it back one more time (July 26 and 28) to 600 movie theaters. Disney really did it up right. They brought back the show's original stars: like Jeremy Jordan, Kara Lindsay and Ben Fankhauser, and added several more dancers for the filming. Plus, it was shot from nearly every angle with 11 cameras. And it paid off: not only growing the ''Newsies'' fan base, but feeding into the various productions that sprung up across the country.

I agree. Newsies was one of the best -- I wish Disney would release it on DVD. I can't handle paying $20 again to see it in a theater. I bought the Memphis DVD and really enjoy it.
