| It seems like out of town tryouts aren’t used very well to make major fixes before broadway. | |

| My guess is that the cost of producing a musical these days is so high that any major work on the show has to be done at some point before the production is built and performing in front of audiences. | |

| Good question! But one that seems born out by many reports here over the years that this or that show didn't seem to make many changes beyond cosmetic details in between an out-of-town tryout and Broadway. This seems to apply even to shows that didn't get overly positive reviews out of town. The reviews for PRETTY WOMAN were pretty dismal, but, aside from a new leading man (a change that did not come from the creative staff), I'm betting that what we see in New York will bear a striking resemblance to what was seen in the tryout. |

| I think WICKED made substantial changes after its SF tryout. Apparently, KC was the star in SF and they had to refocus the show on Elphaba. And Robert Morse was replaced by Joel Grey. | |

| I don't know if it's complacent creatives or inertia, but it seems many out-of-town tryouts make few substantive changes. One of the few exceptions that I actually witnessed was ''Memphis,'' which had 4 out-of-town tryouts before it got to New York. I first saw it at TheatreWorks in Mountain View, Calif., in 2004. I enjoyed the show for the most part, but Act II was problematic and much too dark to complement the more entertaining Act I. Even so, I could tell from the audience's enthusiastic response that ''Memphis'' was a crowd-pleaser. It would reappear in 2008 at the La Jolla Playhouse and then in 2009 at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. I finally saw it again that fall of 2009 on Broadway, and there had been a lotta work done, especially in Act II. Old songs were thrown out. New ones added. And now they had found the right tone and found their audiences in New York … and went on to win the Tony for Best Musical. |
