Milkmaid Matinees ????

I bought a 1946 Theatre World today at the Strand. One of the plays that season was called Maid in the Ozarks (produced by Jules Pfeiffer, of all people) which opened at the Belasco Theatre July 15, 1946 and played for 102 performances, "many of which were Saturday midnight showings and morning milkmaid matinees". I must say I know of a few times certain plays have done a midnight show (usually for the Actors' Fund), but I have never heard of a morning milkmaid matinee. It was actually advertised by its producer as "the worst play ever to hit Broadway". Anybody know the origin of a milkmaid matinee?

Starting in 1935, WNEW ran a radio program called "Milkman's Matinee" from 2 to 7 in the morning. I'm confident the phrase "milkmaid's matinee" is a play on what was by 1946 a well-known title.

(produced by Jules Pfeiffer, of all people)

Not to be confused with Jules Feiffer--although I think you're conflating the two. Feiffer was seventeen at the time, so I'm pretty sure he didn't produce and direct Maid of the Ozarks.

Seth, took half a second
