Milkmaid Matinees ????
Posted by: SpeechTeacher 05:29 pm EDT 06/25/18

I bought a 1946 Theatre World today at the Strand. One of the plays that season was called Maid in the Ozarks (produced by Jules Pfeiffer, of all people) which opened at the Belasco Theatre July 15, 1946 and played for 102 performances, "many of which were Saturday midnight showings and morning milkmaid matinees". I must say I know of a few times certain plays have done a midnight show (usually for the Actors' Fund), but I have never heard of a morning milkmaid matinee. It was actually advertised by its producer as "the worst play ever to hit Broadway". Anybody know the origin of a milkmaid matinee?
