Across from the Friday On Theatre blurbs- a feature I sorely miss, especially the weekly Hirschfeld miniature- is another interesting piece about the shuttering of Neil Simon's JAKE'S WOMEN in San Diego and the decision not to bring it into New York. (It would appear two seasons later after his enormous success with LOST IN YONKERS and play for half a year.)

Stockard Channing was appearing in the Simon and would have been performing in its last week at The Old Globe while SIX DEGREES was having its first week of rehearsals.

I wonder whether Channing mightn't have been the first choice for Ouisa and that she had opted to go with the more likely success- the Neil Simon play- and then when she suddenly became available just as the Guare was going into rehearsals, they engineered a switcheroo?

What I can't get my mind around is why Blythe Danner wasn't terrific as Ouisa Kittredge? She seems to the manner born.

And I'm forgetting: did Swoosie Kurtz ever play Ouisa? I seem to remember- in the prologue to the published version?- that Kristin Griffith took over in rehearsals.

And I'd never known about the tour with Marlo Thomas until today!
