I think the skullduggery you suggest is unlikely. Multiple sources who were present at the first day of rehearsal noted that Danner seemed to not understand a script that everyone else immediately recognized the quality of. Equity rules provided only a short window in which an actor could be fired at the start of rehearsal, so they either had to trust that she would eventually get it, or fire her immediately.
Guare's claim that Channing was not brought in to replace Danner, but merely to fill in at rehearsals until they found a replacement was the general understanding of those involved. The decision to give her the role came later. |
