| Has anyone read or seen the gay play "And Puppy Dog Tails", apparently sort of a happier "Boys in the Band"? | |

| It was referred to in those little "Cue" or "New York Magazine" entries as something like "Another gay play. This time a happy one". This would have been done around the time of "Boys in the Band", but apparently with characters who were more complacent and accepting of themselves. For that time period (1969), that might be something of a landmark. It was produced by Swen Swenson, famous for "I've Got Your Number" in "Little Me", and among its cast were George Reeder, who among other credits, played Nicky Arnstein opposite Barbra Streisand in "Funny Girl" on Broadway as a replacement/understudy, and Ken Kliban, who was later in "As Is", one of the first plays about the AIDS crisis. The play also featured quite a bit of nudity as well, as it was also the time of "Oh! Calcutta!". Bill Murray did the show in a Chicago company. I think the play's script might be available at Lincoln Center research library. | |
