| The best thing about the 70's was the music. So why do a musical about the disco-to-Punk-NewWave transition without disco, punk or new wave music? Why do it with generic musical theater pop? Why have a musical where the female characters do not make any sense? Why have a story where no straight women and no gay men fall in love or even go on a date? Why have a lesbian/trans couple who have no problems and no complexity? Why have Black characters who are not Black? Why have Andy Warhol sponsoring a Black woman when he never helped any Black people, why have a young happy gay man be turned into a ridiculous closet case by a Jewish publicist tempting him with her filthy lucre? Why are artists all hapless? Why have Darko Tresniak direct something he doesn't understand and thereby turning most of the performers into robots moving through their paces? There is one great performance here and that is Theo Stockman as Steve Rubell. No one else can rise above the oatmeal material. It fails and fails and fails. Hard to even try to think about all the money and time that went into this purposeless, soulless meditation on...uhm...how mean the business is? Or something. |
