I saw this a week ago and was also very frustrated by the performance. But, I have to say, in this outing, I don't think it's the material's fault so much as it's the director/adapter and the cast. This show is supposed to be whimsical, silly, quirky, and stylized. It's built to be a tour-de-force for a comic actress to play two entirely different women and link them up with humorous charm.

This production features a leading lady who is definitely not a comedian. She's an aging ingenue who, bless her heart, has no idea what to do with this material. Also, the director (who also made senseless cuts to the score and script) is completely tone deaf. She directed all the book scenes in this very leaden, serious style that is completely at odds with the material. The doctor ends up looking particularly ridiculous in his "Come Back to Me" sequence. The audience should be giggling and excited during that scene, but we end up cringing and feeling awkward for the actor throwing himself on the floor. All wrong.

Also, the choreo was a joke. The ensemble was obviously hired for their vocals (which they did very well - kudos to the musical director) and then they were made to dance beyond their range with choreography disconnected from any plot elements.

I could go on, but obviously I was very annoyed by this production, and I'm sad that the material is being blamed when it's really the fault of this production team who had no understanding of the style and tone of the piece.
