| I saw MY FAIR LADY last night for the third time with a friend who was in from out of town. I was surprised to find slips in the program for two of the leads: Harry Hadden-Paton was out as Higgins with Michael Halling going on in the role; and Norbert Leo Butz was out as Doolittle with Joe Hart going on in the role. Does anyone know if both Hadden-Paton and Butz are on vacation or if it was just a coincidence they were both out on the same night. With that said, both Halling and Hart were magnificent, giving truly wonderful performances. In fact, in many ways, seeing someone completely unknown to me in both roles brought an energy and freshness to the show I found surprising. I don't know if these actors have gone on in these roles in the past but they were both letter perfect and exuded confidence and panache. Halling only had one tiny lyric fumble in "Why Can't A Woman?" but he recovered beautifully and got back on track. For her part, Ambrose was sensational - again! - as Eliza, working with these two fine actors. If Halling and Hart are going on for Hadden-Paton and Butz's vacations, etc., I would strongly encourage fans to try and see them. |
