Williamstown / Boston trip

Here’s what I saw:

The Closet at Williamstown by Douglas Carter Beane.
It’s a kind of clever story about too-PC-ness.
However, the only thing anyone will be talking about is Brooks Ashmanskas as an unashamedly flamboyant out gay man. It’s as subtle as Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Are we laughing at him? Hmmmm. Not sure.
Wouldn't be surprised to see this pop up at MTC or similar.

Pilobolus at Jacobs Pillow.
If you’ve seen them, you know what they’re going to do. Five pieces of various successes.
They curtain call involves a huge slip and slide set up across the stage and the cast sliding across the stage in as little as possible.
(The musical theater equivalent of ending the show with an Abba/Joseph Megamix.)

The Royal Family of Broadway by Bill Finn at Barrington Stage
It’s a big Broadway show, not a small Finn show.
Alas, it did not need to musicalized.
Reviews were good…will it get to NY?

Moulin Rouge….ok, it was cancelled
Replaced with a musical about the Winans (BeBe and CeCe)….I forgot what it’s called.
Some very good gospel music if you like that stuff. They became famous from being on Jim and Tammy Baker’s Praise the Lord show.
The Jim and Tammy Baker part of the show was much more interesting the Winans’ story.
But entertaining enough.

(Travel note…when taking the subway in Boston, you cannot use the receipt to get through the turnstile, you have to use the Charlie Card. Luckily, they have attendants at the stations.)

Jagged Little Pill at ART
Generally, Iif you liked American Idiot, you’ll like this. Directed by Diane Paulus with arrangements by Tom Kitt.
There’s almost too much story (drugs, adoption, date rape, lesbian relationship, etc. etc. etc.)
Elizabeth Stanley will win a Tony for her performance as the mother.
The entire extended run is Boston is sold out.
I don’t know that I’d see the show again if it came to New York, but I’d definitely buy the CD.
