And the Dolly understudy at the time Midler was out was Linda Mugleston, who has made a very nice career of being understudy and standby for leading roles (and sometimes supporting ones). She often also plays small roles and appears in the ensemble, as she did in Wonderful Town, where she played Violet, was a Villager, and went on many times as Ruth. I saw her go on for Judy Kaye in Cinderella, when Kaye had taken over as Marie.

As she is now Mrs. Pearce in MFL, I wonder who is the current Dolly understudy or standby.

Still, alternates rather than understudies have been known to go on when the regular performer is out, depending on the circumstances. And there was that Apple Tree performance, the first one after the Tonys, where Harris started the show, stopped after 10 minutes, and the show restarted with Carmen Alvarez as Eve. Then Phyllis Newman got to the Shubert and took over for "Lady or the Tiger?" and "Passionella."
