The show is not fixable, I agree. The original Broadway version is probably the best, but that's not saying much. Peter Filichia nailed it in a column years ago: We don't want Daisy to get together with Mark, who thinks she's a slob who is beneath him but he is fascinated by Melinda. She deserves someone who appreciates her. We appreciate her. He never really does.

And except for Daisy and perhaps Kriakos, no one in the book seems a real, three-dimensional person. And Lerner himself cut Kriakos for the tour and for the licensed version. Not a help.

No one has ever fixed the basic problems, and I think they're just not fixable. If someone could actually solve some of the book problems, you'd need new songs for those specific book adjustments (not songs that Lerner and Lane wrote for other projects).
