I saw it at the NT and didn't love it. I remember her singing landing in the small Lyttelton as thin and inadequate. (I had to remind myself of this watching the current revival, as I thought Lauren Ambrose sounded beautiful in the higher sections but perhaps didn't ideally navigate the chest-voice-vs.-head-voice stuff or ideally punch out the lyrics on the lower notes of "Just You Wait" and "Show Me"... then I had to remember that there are not a million Julie Andrewses running around out there and if the other alternative for 21st century A-list directors' tastes is Martine McCutcheon, then bring on the Lauren Ambroses!)

As for your feeling that her acting was fresh and natural - I suppose I remember her having a certain charm, and she looked beautiful. But overall, in both singing and acting, I guess it was a performance that I would have felt was nice if I were seeing a high school production, but I have no idea why she was judged the best candidate to play this role at the National Theatre.

Didn't think Pryce was too interesting in this role either.

Agreed that their dippy new overture was dumb and started the evening off on a low-energy, disappointing note.

I have absolutely zero memory of how they played the ending - I must have mentally checked out on the production by that point, because I'm drawing a total blank. Did they also burst into gales of laughter in the Richard Chamberlain/Melissa Errico production? Or am I conflating the two in my mind? Whether you love Sher's choice or hate it, at least we'll all remember how this revival handled the ending...
