The slippers line. Then an enormous pause. Then the laughter.

Interesting what you recall about Pryce. I'm such a fan of his, it's interesting how little I recall his take. I just remember that he was almost aggressively asexual in the role, which to my thinking is never a plus. The show was rather unsettled in the great big Drury Lane, which is funny because I believe that's where the original played back in the day. (I'd seen everything from "Billy" to "Chorus Line" there for comparison's sake.) The evening, heat aside, didn't linger. But it's telling that I didn't play the recording. I was much more interested in ... wait for it ... "The Beautiful Game," which I'd seen earlier that week in London and found enthralling, lyric issues much discussed and understood. I thought it was Lloyd Webber's return to form, and was haunted by the show. After 9/11 (this was 8 weeks before), it didn't seem a likely transfer. But it was the musical I remembered most from that week. I also endured the truly dreadful "Witches of Eastwick," which by then had a dreary by-the-numbers performance energy, its arch designs and farcical playing off-putting. "Fair Lady" was positive, but as the years pass, unmemorable.
